~ A Quick Word ~
Ohana is a Hawaiian word that means “family”. When our family was living outside of our country as missionaries our young six year old son would often quote a line from the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch in which young Lilo says, “Ohana means family and family means that no one gets left behind.”
Family is what God is longing for. It was and always has been His plan when He created mankind. It is also what we long for. Belonging to a beautiful and united family is the most precious gift we can receive. So often when we meet broken people their story begins with a broken family. We were made to be a part of a family; to find love, safety, nurturing and unity there.
A few months ago I began hearing the Lord say one phrase over and over every time I’d pray for the ChurchL “When did I go from being family to being a cause?” God never intended His Church to be cause focused, but family focused.
John 17: 20-
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
This was Jesus’ prayer for those who believe in Him. That we would be ONE! That we would be family. There are many worthy causes, but the best way to fulfill a cause is to function as a family. Most of our causes are due to the breakdown of family. Heaven is family and there is perfect unity there. Our Papa God is wanting to father His family and lead them into unity. Let’s allow Him to have the dream of His heart. As we see a great harvest come in, let us prepare a family for them to come into. They don’t need a system or an organization; they need a family.
This is the written account of Adam’s family line. When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.
If we are created in the likeness of God and God is One then we are to be one also. One of my favorite passages in the scriptures is the covenant that Ruth makes with Naomi:
Ruth 1: 16-17
But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.”
My prayer is to see these words spoken and true covenant made between believers so that in the days to come the world will know where to go when they need a family.
