I am normally quick to say that I live by faith but the Spirit of the Lord stopped me short the other day when He revealed an area that I was calling faith but was actually only hope. If the Lord has spoken and we remain in hope rather than faith then doubt has come in.
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Hebrews 11:1 NIV
In this one area of my life I was far more postured in a “wait and see” mode. I had, over the years, had some disappointments that created doubt and that doubt downgraded my faith (in this particular area) to hope.
Don’t get me wrong; hope is beautiful and it is the pathway to our posture of faith. The difference is that once the Lord speaks there is a transition from hope to faith. What we hoped for can now turn to a confidant assurance in the truth that “what He has said will surely come to pass.” Faith is required once He speaks.
This may be in an area of your life as well. Though it was in one area, like Galatians 5:9 says,
“A little leaven leavens the whole lump.”
This one, seemingly small, area of my life was beginning to spread to other parts. Doubt is like yeast. It creates double-mindedness, it creates an atmosphere void of confidence and it puts you on the fence between two opinions.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.”
It goes on to say that the double-minded man should not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord because he is double-minded. This is very sobering.
The word of the Lord and His promises over our lives are such precious gifts. When He speaks a word that the fulfillment of a hope we have will come then we can be sure it will! If we plant His word into the soil of doubt, it is like putting a precious gift into the fire and hoping it doesn’t burn.
When God speaks we must move from hope to the confident assurance of our hope. That is faith!! What He said will happen WILL surely happen. We may get the details a bit wrong or the pathway may look different but it will surely happen.
Together, let us take doubt and throw it into the fire and let us take hold of faith and build upon the sure and confident foundation of faith.
