During our Sunday service one of the young men at our church shared a testimony about how he began our discipleship program. He said,
“The Lord said to me, ‘If you want fish, you must first cast your net.’”
When he said these words it hit my spirit with such weight and truth. How often do God’s people wait for the fish before they’ve ever cast their net? I love the story in Luke 5:4-5
“When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” “Master,” Simon replied, “we’ve worked hard all night long and caught nothing! But at Your word, I’ll let down the nets.””
Peter was tired. His hours of work had produced nothing. He was done and he was discouraged. Yet, he says, “But at Your word I’ll let down the nets again.”
And we know what happened then. A catch so big it almost sunk the boat!
I hear the Lord saying to some of you who are reading this, “What are you waiting for? Go to the deep waters of trusting Me and cast your nets!”
Sometimes we wait for a breakthrough before we’ve even put faith and obedience to what the Lord has asked. We say things like, “When the provision comes in— then I will act.” I quite honestly cannot bring to mind any time that the Lord has asked my husband and I to do something big that did not require us to first let down our net into the deep waters of trusting His voice and instructions. There were times when we were tired and all of the natural evidence pointed at sure failure but we obeyed His instructions. And sure enough— a catch bigger than we could imagine came in.
What has God put on your heart to do? And what has He asked you to do that requires trust and faith in Him? Are you waiting for fruit before planting your seed or waiting for fish before casting your net?
Shallow trust only allows you to find the minnows. God is calling to some of you to come into the depths of obedience and trust in Him that seems “way over your head.” And it is! Yet your were created for the deep places that often look impossible. It is there that the big fish live. If He is calling you to cast your net there then know this, “A big catch is waiting to fill your net.”
Do not delay any longer but take that step and cast your net into the depths of His faithfulness and watch what God will do.
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” Matthew 7:9-11
