Encounter or Immersion
Kathi Pelton
In 2019 I had a dream that deeply impacted me. In this dream I was offered either a “body spray” (mist) of the Lord or a “perfume” of Him. I didn’t fully understand the terminology because it didn’t seem to fit with spiritual language; although perfume surely seemed like the logical choice.
Then in the dream I was taken to a place where I watched as people come near to the Lord to receive an brief encounter, or mist of His presence and power. They enjoyed these encounters, but when they walked away they appeared more like someone who had just enjoyed a fun carnival ride— it didn’t result in transforming them but they did enjoy it. When I saw this, I immediately told the Lord I wanted more than a mist or brief encounter with Him, I wanted the pure perfume of His presence.
At that point in the dream I was taken to what appeared to be a baptismal pool. I was placed in this pool and suddenly immersed in Him. I was immersed in His full, undiluted presence from head to toe— inside and out. As I was immersed in His pure perfume, I lost “me” and felt myself one with Him.
Then I was able to see what this pool was from a distance and it was a pool within the center of His eye. I heard the words,
“You are the apple of My eye and created to be one with Me— and see what I see.”
In this dream, the immersion into the perfume of His presence and love was completely transformative. It took me from mere encounter to a baptism into oneness with Him. The scent of His presence filled the atmosphere and I knew that it would now be upon me and upon all who would chose the immersion over a mere encounter.
There is a choice; encounter or immersion; a mist that will bring momentary joy or a baptism that transforms everything about you. The choice is an invitation, but the price for immersion is greater because you will lose yourself. But the gain is so much greater because you will be transformed into becoming one with Him. You will never see things the same or live the same because you will be intoxicated by His presence and captured by His love for you. You will see all things from His eyes rather than your own.
“Your robes are full of the smell of all sorts of perfumes and spices; music from the king’s ivory houses has made you glad.” Psalm 45:8
