God loves to take our simple “yes” and transform lives out of just one word! But this yes is not just a word— but something deeper. What is the deeper thing?
In the Book of Ruth, Ruth said “yes” to her mother-in-law, Naomi, and went from gleaning leftovers in a field to owning the field— from widowhood to being a bride— from poverty to riches— from loneliness to family.
But her simple yes had one thing attached to it that made the difference— that was COVENANT!
“…For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.” Ruth 1:16
Ruth made a covenant with Naomi that brought blessings and restoration for both of them. Covenant is what God has made with us— and it brings us into the unbreakable promises of sonship and betrothal with Him. We go from being wretched, poor and in widowhood to beautiful, rich and never again alone!
Covenant is like a legal agreement— it cannot be broken. Let’s always let our yes be a yes that carries the seriousness of covenant. Not a flippant yes that really means, “Let’s see how this goes and if I don’t like it, I can change my yes to a no.” God has never changed his covenant with us and our yes to him must also carry that same unchanging commitment. Whether we are in a season of gleaning in a field or owning that field— may our yes be one that honors covenant,
So, we say to the Lord,
“For whatever you say for me to do, I will do, and wherever you say for me to go, I will go; your people will be my people…and you will forever be my God!”
A covenant yes is the key to eternal promises.
