The Sound of Silence

By Kathi Pelton

Did you know that silence has a sound that heaven hears?

People are often uncomfortable with silence, especially within the context of a corporate setting or with another person present. Yet, the people that you can sit in silence with are usually the most intimate people in your life. And, if that is the case— why are we so uncomfortable with silence in prayer, silence in worship or silence in church?

Silence has a sound…

The sound of silence is the sound of pouring out your surrender. Just as occurs with the pouring out of perfume— it has no audible sound and yet the fragrance fills the room and immerses all in its beauty.

Silence is a response to awe. It is the sound of the fear of the Lord; of reverence and awe. It stops every act of striving and frantic activity to yield to the posture of fully trusting God. Silence before the Lord is to be still and acknowledge that he alone is God.

Silence makes room! It makes for heaven to touch earth; and earth is his footstool. When do we use a footstool? When we enter a resting posture— therefore if earth is his footstool, we are designed to be a resting place for the Lord. Silence is the sound of rest.

This is what the LORD says:

“Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house that you would build for me, and where will my resting place be? All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came into being,”declares the LORD. “But this is the one to whom I will look favorably: to the one who is humble and contrite in spirit, and who trembles at my message.” Isaiah 66:1-2

Silence trembles at his Word and takes a posture of a humble and contrite spirit. Silent trust makes a resting place for our hearts and his heart that beats within us. It is the sound of intimate communion with him.

Isaiah 66 goes on to talk about a loud noise and that sound is the sound of God’s retribution,

“Listen to that uproar in the city!

Listen to that noise from the Temple!

It is the sound of the LORD paying back retribution to his enemies!” Isaiah 66:6

We can be silent and know that he will pay back retribution to his enemies— and our enemies.

Silence is also the peaceful expression of a child nursing at his mother’s breast. It nourishes, it comforts, it rests and receives life. Our prayers and our time spent with the Lord should include expressions of this posture. He desires to comfort us and nourish us with living water.

Do not shy away from silence with the Lord. It is the highest form of trust. Often the loudest prayers come from the most fearful people— those who are afraid that God does not hear and will not act. The enemy hates our quieted souls that fully trust and depend upon the God of all creation. For it is there that room is made for God to move.

Practice the art of silence— it is active trust, active faith, and active surrender to his power. Just as there are times for a joyful noise unto the Lord— there are times when we allow the spiritual sound of silence to release its fragrance.

“For God alone my soul in silence waits.”Psalm 62:1
