Letting Go of the WHY

The posture of the believer who has committed their life to hear and obey the Lord, is not promised that hearing will always include understanding the instructions that have been given. Though you understand what he is asking— you may not know the “why?” until after you’ve obeyed. Quite honestly, the majority of the major acts of obedience in my life have come as unexpected requests from the Lord that included little understanding of why God was ordering our steps in a direction that our personal plans had not included.

For example, our family never planned to live outside of the U.S. and yet the Lord asked us to move to another country at a time that completely took us by surprise. And we surely never planned to live in the DC region! Yet, God spoke to us and then confirmed his word and though we had no understanding of the “why”— we obeyed.

God had plans much larger than our thoughts or plans had made allowance for. These two particular moves opened more doors for us and directly connected us to his future for us more than any others. And those are only two examples of hearing and obeying without understanding. This is who he is and what he has planned for all of his sons and daughters. It is not about what we are gifted in or strong in— it is about his strength in the midst of our weakness and our willingness to yield to his voice.

I have become even more convinced than ever of the importance of living a life that is postured to “hear and obey.” Also, to fully trust him when we don’t have the full revelation of why he is asking what he is asking. Trust comes before understanding! I believe that in the days ahead there will be less and less understanding and yet, more and more trust in his wisdom.

You may feel ill equipped for his service— this matters little in light of an obedient heart and life. Obedience equips you, like little else will. Emptying yourself of confidence in your self (your strength and your giftings) will cause you to put the fullness of your confidence in Christ alone.

You may be in the midst of wondering why God is leading you on that path you’re walking down and yet your unanswered questions can be put to rest as you remember the testimonies of the heroes of faith that went where he called them— not knowing why but determined to put their trust in him.

Allow his peace to hem you in to his path as you go. Peace will enable you to have joy in the journey ahead— even if the path forward appears impossible. Trust him— obey him— follow him no matter what your mind can or cannot understand.

Obedience will usher you into intimacy, into being carried by his Spirit, into the miraculous and into the “beyond what you can ask or imagine.”

Hear and obey— there’s no better way!
