He’s Tending To The Roots

Yesterday during my prayer time the Lord asked me to sketch a tree in my journal. As I sketched it I wondered what he wanted to speak to me. When I was done I sensed nothing and then he said, “Sketch the roots.” I began to draw the underground roots and each time I thought I was done he’d say, “Extend them further.” As I did this I realized that the roots of the tree now far exceeded the height and width of the tree that people could see above the ground.

Then the Lord began to speak,

“I am tending to the roots! What men can see above ground may seem slow growing or even stagnant in growth but they do not see what I am doing. I am tending to the roots. I am nurturing, growing, expanding, strengthening and causing them to go deep and wide. What will come next is sudden and unexpected growth to the tree that is above ground. It will grow high and wide and produce heavy fruit. But to anchor it securely I had to form and nurture the roots that will hold it in place.”

I feel that this word and picture is for many. It may be your church, your business, your family or just for you personally. But do not be quick to judge what you can see or measure because you do not see what the Lord is doing in the unseen places— he is tending to the roots.

This must happen before the major growth of every seen part. The root system is what feeds, receives nutrients, holds the tree in place (especially through storms), creates strong branches and grows abundant fruit.

If you have felt discouraged by “what you see”— then stop and consider this; God may be tending to the roots of that thing or that person and growth, change, fruitfulness and life will come very soon.

Remain faithful to the work that the Lord has called you to and have faith that he has not forgotten you or what you’ve been nurturing. Ask him to reveal to you what he has been doing.

And remember— the unseen work prepares you for the visible growth that is about to emerge!
