No Place To Sit

Our family is in the long process of moving to another state. A part of our process is to once again sell most of our furniture (this is not the first time we’ve done this!). On Sunday evening we sold our living room sectional sofa— the kind with recliners, adjustable headrests and oh so comfortable. With three and a half weeks to go before our actual move we needed a place to sit so we brought in our comfortable outdoor chairs and put them in our living room. But on Monday they sold too. Now we had no where to sit and with tired bodies and boxes everywhere we were feeling a bit sorry for ourselves and our current predicament.
Then I remembered the verse from Matthew 8:20 about Jesus,
Jesus replied to him, “Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
I still have a comfortable king sized bed in my room, a roof over my head, a car that takes me to my destinations, etc. Jesus walked for miles most days and then slept on the ground. He had nowhere to lay his head— and I can assure you that they didn’t have camp chairs to unfold when they stopped to rest (which we do!).
We may face uncomfortable circumstances at times or during seasons of transition but Jesus chose to have no home, no bed and no chairs to call his own— and why? FOR US.
Then he chose a hard wooden cross to complete his journey that was to redeem our lives.
Whatever discomfort you are facing— whether it’s simply no place to sit or something else— as you experience your “discomfort” begin to release thanksgiving and gratitude to the Lord for all the discomforts and pain that he bore for you. There is something about praise and thankfulness that turns our momentary afflictions into something that brings him glory.
So tonight when I go to rest my tired body in a camp chair after a full day of packing, I will remember what he did for me. I will be grateful for a place to rest my head, a vehicle to get me to my next destination and for a roof over my head. He had none of those things— and he volunteered for discomfort and pain for my sake and yours.
But now, Jesus has a place to sit! It is a throne that is at the right hand of his Father.
From that throne shared with his Father, this is what he says over us,
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”” Revelation 21:3-5
He had no place to sit so that when he would take his seat upon the throne— we would have an eternal promise!
Thank you Jesus!
God has asked us to move back to California. The costs there are very high for everything— housing, gas, insurance, etc. Just the moving truck alone is over $2000!
