Weighing Life’s Seasons

By Kathi Pelton

My husband and I have spent decades serving the Lord in many different capacities; pastoring, directing a house of prayer, itinerant ministry, prayer tours, authoring books, etc. Reading that list sounds “spiritually weighty” or even impressive for a social media post. Now, fast forward to today— we are caring full time for my husband’s dad who is 91, yesterday we helped our niece and her husband move, last night I walked to the park to play with our granddaughter and today we will spend time with dear friends from our youth and just to catch up. That list doesn’t sound super “spiritually weighty”, does it?

Yet, when I go before the Lord he says to me that whatever I do, in love and obedience to his voice carries the same weight.

If you are in a season of life that looks unimpressive— or hidden— then know this, “The Lord is not impressed with all that you do that makes the masses cheer, he is pleased with what you do out of love and obedience— whatever that is!”

So, for all of those out there changing diapers, caring for children, going to work from 9 to 5 (probably longer), caring for an aging parent, mowing your neighbor’s lawn, helping a friend move or just showing up for someone who needs help…God sees your heart, your service, your love, your kindness and your sacrifice. It is WEIGHTY to him.

He does not measure our lives according to what impresses men but rather according to what is done in love and obedience.

You may feel hidden but you are not hidden from God. Though the world may not celebrate what you are doing or appreciate the work you are doing; the Lord does!

When I was young and raising my babies a minister once said to me, “Remember Kathi, little children means little ministry.” I understood that this person meant that while I was raising babies that I wouldn’t have time to do many of the things that older people can do. But I must say, now that I’m older I completely disagree with that statement because raising babies was my greatest and biggest ministry! Now, caring for the man who raised my husband is another big ministry…not impressive to the world or a photo op for social media but it is “seen by God as weighty.”

Ministry is whatever we do as his children in love, service and obedience to his voice. It is not only that time that you took a photo on a plane going to another country to pray or speak and it is not only when you held a microphone in your hand but it is when you held the hand of someone he loves and who needed you.

He says to you, “Well done good and faithful servant!”

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17

Give thanks to the Father for whatever he has you doing, whether it appears great or small. I guarantee you it is great in his eyes!

NEW EPISODES OF OUR PODCAST ARE OUT NOW!

This is what one listener wrote about our podcast episode called “Make Peace With The Mystery”,

“Well this one got me. Making peace with the mysteries of hard things. Some of those hard things are certainly harder to make peace with. Thank you for once again sharing your lives with us. When Jeff shared about the time you lost your baby and he said to God in deep anguish, ‘I don’t understand!’, it resonated deeply in me. You not only share your lives, but you guys have lived through some real hard and relatable life stuff. Bless you for sharing the hope with us.”
