Monday Morning Meditations
by Kathi Pelton
Begin this week with words that are pleasing to the Lord. Align every word that comes from your mouth with God’s heart. Let them be seasoned with life and love. The Word says that what flows from our mouths comes from the abundance of our hearts (Matthew 12:33-35). If your words do not align with purity, life and love then ask the Spirit to search your heart and cleanse any place that is not pleasing to Him. He is the one who can renew our hearts.
Words are far more powerful than we realize. Not only can words harm but they can heal. Each day I start my day by praying and declaring words of life over my husband and every one of my children. We need to be coming into agreement with all that God says about our spouses, our children and those around us in our prayers and declarations.
Let’s look at some key verses in the Bible about the power of our words,
Proverbs 12:18 “There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
Once again, words can harm or heal. Be wise and release words that heal. This is not only in our prayers but in our communication with one another. I have witnessed (as I am sure you have) married couples whose words become like a sword fight when a conflict arises. They cut deep and divide. Asking God for the tongue of a wise man is wisdom! Wisdom speaks life and healing.
Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
We want our words to give grace to the one who hears us, not defile the listener. Words that devalue character, are depraved, perverted, wicked or evil would be considered “corrupt”. We do not want to devalue (debase) our character or another’s character through our words. And, we do not want to devalue God’s character by speaking words that harm another or misrepresent Him since He is our Father.
Matthew 12:36-27 “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Once words are released from our mouths, we cannot gather them back in. It’s like firing a gun, once the trigger is pulled we cannot stop the bullet from hitting the target at which it was aimed. Regret is almost immediate. We must continually be allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds, conform our hearts and transform our lives to be aligned with His character. God desires that our words will justify us rather than condemn us.
Last, we all know this verse very well,
Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.”
Let us eat the fruit of words that are sweetened with life and truth. Healing words, soothing words, words that build up and words that edify…these are pleasing to both the Lord and the one who hears you. Begin this day with a commitment to speak life over yourself, your family and every person you encounter this week.
I declare life and purity over you this day!
