Today I was remembering a vision that the Lord gave to me many years ago. The vision was of a father’s strong arm pulling a tiny child close to him. The arm of this farher was so big that it shielded every vulnerable part of this small child.
He was fully shielding his little one.
Then I began to hear the words from Psalm 91,
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
In him I will trust!
Often as we grow from childhood to adulthood, we feel a sense of having to be independent and we begin to take on the burdens of life, the weight of providing for ourselves and our family, and often we even pick up the responsibilities for others and carry them upon ourselves. Though God commands us to work hard and act with integrity (be responsible), we must not become independent from the care of our Father.
We will be left completely vulnerable to the weight of the cares of this life apart from dependence on him so we must yield to his strong arm and become fully dependent on him— like a child. Only then are we able to take his light burden and be relieved of the heavy burdens that we were never meant to carry.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
As we look at some of the things that men and women of God in the Bible were asked to do, we must realize that they were able to accomplish these things only because they yielded and surrendered the weight of what he asked back to Him.
For example, Moses could not have delivered the Jews from the captivity of Egypt had he not yielded to God; allowing his power to move through his life. Abraham also had to yield to God in order to see the promises he had made come to fruition in his life. Lastly, Mary— the mother of Jesus, had to yield to God in order to carry out the request to carry the Messiah as a young virgin. This was her yielded response,
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38
In all these examples, and so many more, their yielding to God and his power was the key to accomplish what he had asked of them. God often asks us to do the impossible— or walk through what looks impossible, but our response and responsibility in the request is to yield by saying yes. Then we yield even greater by allowing ourselves to become fully dependent, and in doing so we enter into a trust that shatters natural fears and overcomes natural barriers. With God we can walk in a supernatural way that defies what man calls impossible.
…I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
We shall not fear because we dwell in the secret place, under the mighty arm of our God.
“Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished. If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.” Psalms 91:5-12
Like the child in my vision, who was fully vulnerable while left alone but fully shielded as he was drawn near to the father; so are we unless we allow our lives to be drawn under the shadow of his wing and trust with childlike faith in his faithfulness to carry the burdens of life for us.
We shall not fear for God is our refuge!
The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.” Psalms 91:14-16
These are his words to you today— his promise over your life everyday!
