It’s Transition Time! Your Segue To Something New

by Kathi Pelton

I returned last night from a trip where we helped facilitate a thirty-hour worship an prayer burn. During these thirty hours there was a “transition” every two hours where the musicians and prayer leaders would change. The beautiful flow that had been carried and unbroken for the previous two hours would reach a segue moment, where as smoothly as possible a new group of musicians and prayer leaders would take their place. Then a new sound and “flavor” would begin taking us into new realms of beauty.

As I woke up this morning in a personal transition from one event in Florida, back to a few days at home, and then onto another event this weekend, I heard the Lord speak to me about these transition moments or “segue” moments in our lives.

First, we need to understand that a segue is defined as a “smooth transition.” We experience segues in worship sets when skilled musicians can transition from one song to another, possibly in a different key. There is an art and skill to make that transition smooth rather than abrupt so the flow is not disrupted. There are segues in conversations that cause a change of subject to flow smoothly rather than being confusing and disruptive. The listener may be completely unaware that a transition has occurred; the flow was not broken because of a skilled segue. Learning to navigate life’s transitions or segues is just as important.

Today the Lord spoke to me saying that many of His people are about to be—or are already in—transition moments. He said that if you will allow His Spirit to navigate you through them He will cause it to be a “segue” (smooth transition) rather than an abrupt interruption. When the old (what you were previously doing) abruptly and suddenly stops, it can interrupt the flow and be jarring emotionally and spiritually and cause disruption to those around you. But God desires to give you a segue rather than an interruption.

A segue is still a transition from one thing to a different thing, but the difference is that it is smooth and does not stop the flow. The Spirit of the Lord is so skilled at creating segues in our lives. When He navigates these times they do not bring trauma or disrupt flow. They become a beautiful corridor that ushers you smoothly from one place to another. The place of transition can be beautiful when Holy Spirit is in it.

I think by nature many of us live for the “peak” moments where experiences and events crescendo isn’t breakthrough, but there can also be such beauty, peace, and joy found in the transition times. When you invite the Spirit of the Lord to turn your transition into an anointed segue then the people around you will hardly notice that a change has occurred, because it happened so naturally and peacefully. You will flow smoothly into your new season without disruption, disturbance, and stress.

I have been through many transition moments in my life and ministry. In the early years they were rough! I tried to navigate them with my understanding and found myself stressed and overwhelmed by the process. By the time the transition was completed, I was depleted! But throughout the years I have discovered that as I yield to the Spirit that a beautiful and peaceful segue from one season to another is created for me. But it truly takes an unbroken flow of surrender and of remaining “in the Spirit” to embrace and encounter them.

If you are sensing that one season of your life is coming to a close and another is about to begin, ask the Lord to give you an anointed, Spirit-led segue. This will assure that peace and joy remain in the transition.

On a side note: in my experience, when we don’t yield to seeing a smooth transition it not only creates a break in the flow for you personally but it is disruptive to those around you. What does not occur naturally and smoothly will feel “unnatural and harsh.” This will often create an atmosphere where people become offended, confused, and disheartened and “breaks” occur. We do not want our transitions to cause a break but to usher everyone into the new with unbroken beauty.

It is time for spiritual segues to occur in place of rough and intrusive breaks. “Spirit come! Come and usher us through spiritual segues that flow naturally and are hardly noticed. Thank you that You are the God of the crescendos and the God of the segues. We yield to the sound and the movements of the way transitions are supposed to be experienced.” Amen
